By law, prior to disturbing the ground in any way, your first call is always to your state’s 811 “Call Before You Dig” Service Center (Miss Utility). Their job is to only mark publicly owned utility lines up to the service meter and to only scan for the specific public utilities listed on their work ticket. They do not scan for any private utilities or any other signals or utilities outside of those listed on their work ticket. Additionally, Miss Utility is not intended as a “call before you design” service.

Privately owned utilities make up the majority of all buried utilities, therefore, solely relying on Miss Utility leaves you vulnerable to damages, safety hazards, project delays, change orders, service interruptions, inaccuracies in design, and other costly complications.
